Description:Why do birds migrate? Why are the Lake Erie Islands such important stops along their migratory route? During this intergenerational Discover Island Nature session, learn about the behaviors and biology of the bird species that that migrate each year through the Lake Erie region. Begin your day with certified bird bander Tom Bartlett while he demonstrates how to band and record migratory songbirds. Brush up on your listening and song recognition skills during an expert led nature walk and learn to identify birds by sound and sight. After lunch enjoy a private visit to the Lake Erie Island Nature and Wildlife Center, followed by a walk on their nature trail and around their gardens landscaped for the birds.
All programs are held on South Bass Island. Registration begins at approximately 9:30 am and sessions conclude no later than 3:30 pm. Schedule times, itinerary, ferry schedules, and maps will be sent with your registration materials or may be found at www.lakeerieislandsbsc.com. Programs are appropriate for all age levels but do require some walking, standing and lecture time. The cave program requires the use of a ladder to access the private cave. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Vegetarian lunches are available upon request one week prior to the event.
