Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial will open to celebrate its 107th year in operation. The 25-acre Park and Visitor Center is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily until September 11, 2022.
Planting the Seeds of Peace
In celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday and a nod to neighboring Canada, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Rangers will help kids make seed pots out of newspaper and give programs on proper planting techniques and on pollinators. Rangers will give a program on the importance of choosing native plants and of not introducing invasive plant species into the environment. The program will take place at the Monument Visitor Center at 11 am.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial was established to honor those who fought and died in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between the United States, Great Britain and Canada. The Memorial, rising 352 feet over Lake Erie, is situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world. The 352-foot tall structure is the world’s largest Doric column and is made of pink granite from Milford, MA. The column has a wood base structure with an outer concrete core. Park Rangers in 1812 period military uniforms will fire a musket salute after the morning flag raising ceremony.
