Perry’s Monument Opens
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial will open to celebrate its 105th year in operation. The 25-acre Park, Memorial Column and Visitor Center is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily. The June 13 date is also the 105th anniversary of the Memorial opening to the public. The park’s reproduction 32-pound carronade will be on full display providing demonstrations on June 13 and 14.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial was established to honor those who fought and died in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between the United States, Great Britain and Canada. The Memorial, rising 352 feet over Lake Erie, is situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world. The 352-foot tall structure is the world’s largest Doric column and is made of pink granite from Milford, MA. The column has a wood base structure with an outer concrete core. Park Rangers in 1812 period military uniforms will fire a musket salute after the morning flag raising ceremony.
